The Porterville distribution center's runoff floods nearby residents.
|
WARN has callaborated with the Merced Alliance for Responsible Growth to fight a proposed Wal-Mart Distribution Center in Merced, CA. If erected the center would be an environmental and public health nightmare. Merced is in the San Joaqin Valley in which much of California's pollution just sits. Merced has the 6th highest levels of ozone pollution of all cities in the US and asthma among children has risen by 200% from increased pollution sources throughout the state. A Wal-Mart Distribution Center with an estimated 900 trucks coming through, and an additional 2,100 car trips to and from the site a day will further exacerbate these problems. Moreover, the proposed site at 1.1 million square feet or 24 football fields would be within a one mile radius of five schools, the closest one, Pioneer Elementary, is only 4 blocks away! Additional environmental concerns include the cutting down of 11,000 Almond trees, and the polluting effects of water runoff on the surrounding area.
PROPOSAL STATUS
The city is waiting for the environmental impact report being conducted by a private consultant. FEMA has already deemed the site a flood zone.
